Pigeon problem in stables
Stables are ideal places for pigeons. They provide a reliable, daily food source. And they provide roosting spots protected from the elements. Pigeons like to roost in the upper rafters. During the day they will come and go. And pigeons aren’t phased by noise and daily activities.
How to remove pigeons from stables
Removing pigeons from stables is typically only be accomplished by one means- with an air rifle. Spikes and netting won’t keep roosting pigeons away unless every single rafter and ledge is either netted off or is equipped with spikes. This is usually impractical and costly.
Air rifle to remove pigeons
Usually the pigeons that feed from horse troughs during the day are the same ones that spend the night in stables. Therefore, removing the pigeons that roost the night is usually the best place to start. After dark pigeons are reluctant to fly away or even move. An air rifle works well because it doesn’t make any noise, so neither the pigeons nor the horses are alarmed. The pigeons can be shot from short range, usually around 5 to 10 yards. The pellet from an air rifle has just enough power to be effective on a pigeon, but not enough to dent or puncture tin sheeting.
Pigeons eating horse feed
Sometimes the pigeon problem is during the afternoon at feeding time. Flocks of pigeons can arrive at horse feeding time. Pigeons are easy to dispatch in a paddock because they are reluctant to fly off because its their usual feeding time. While a few may escape, most can be shot and then collected up. A follow-up visit can be planned for the following fortnight to remove any surviving pigeons.
