Pigeons under solar panels
Pigeons love to roost under solar panels. Its one of their favourite spots. They return every afternoon. And the mess they create gets worse and worse. They become active on the roof in the early morning, which during the summer months is far too early to be woken up.
Pigeons will fly off for food during the day, and then return later to sit on the roof. By late afternoon they will have all returned, ready for another night under the solar panels.
Same pigeons keep returning
It’s the same pigeons that keep returning each night- not different ones. Once they have taken up residence, nothing can keep them away. Plastic owls don’t keep them away. Ultrasonic noises don’t keep them away. Spraying them with the hose doesn’t keep them away. Clearing out their nests doesn’t keep them away. Trapping them to set them free doesn’t work- they fly straight back. Narcotic poisoning can work, but its a long, intensive, multi-week process.
Netting may not work
Netting off the solar panels will exclude them from living under the panels, however what sometimes happens is they resort to just sitting on the roof at night instead.
When netting off the panels, every side of every panel must be netted. Not a single gap measuring 5 cm by 5 cm can remain. Otherwise the pigeons will wiggle through. And the netting needs to be securely fastened, otherwise the pigeons will push their way through. For two storey homes netting off the solar panels isn’t normally an option. That’s because access to the bottom side of the panels next to the roof gutter is usually very difficult.
Spikes may not work
Installing spikes around solar panels may work if every side of every panel is completely barricaded. Not a single gap measuring 5 cm by 5 cm can remain. Otherwise the pigeons will push their way through. And the spikes need to be securely fastened, otherwise the pigeons will push them over. Installing spikes on two storey homes isn’t normally an option. That’s because access to the bottom side of the panels next to the roof gutter is usually very difficult.
Air rifle may be quite effective
When pigeons are roosting under solar panels, usually the most efficient way to remove them is with an air rifle. An air rifle is quick, effective, and immediate. And they won’t come back.
