Pigeons at shopping centre

Shopping centre pigeon problem. How to get rid of pigeons from a shopping centre.

Pigeon problem at a shopping centre

Shopping centres tend to attract pigeons. During the day their presence is obvious and unsightly. They sit around the entrances, on beams and structures around the building, on the top of walls, high up on parapet walls, and fly around the carpark. At night, pigeons will roost under verandahs and on the roof. The mess they create builds over time.

Netting for air conditioning units

Roof top air conditioning units is the first place to exclude them from. This can be economically accomplished with netting. The problem doesn’t disappear, its just transferred to other spots around the roof. The pigeons won’t leave, but continue to roost in any other spots.

Air rifle can be effective

Because its the same pigeon extended family that sleeps on the roof, the problem can be made to go away by removing the pigeon flock. The most effective means is with an air rifle. At night pigeons are reluctant to fly or even budge from their roosting spots, so they are able to be removed with an air rifle pellet one after another. The air rifle doesn’t disturb them because it doesn’t make any noise. Once stunned, they are easy to collect around the roof. On the roof at night- behind the parapet wall- is also the most discrete way to remove pigeons. It’s done after trading hours, and on a quiet trading evening. Typically a Sunday evening or a Monday evening.

A programme of pigeon removal

A programme of pigeon removal might involve an initial one hour evening visit. This may be followed up by one or more monthly visits in order to make sure the whole pigeon family is removed, and that no other neighbourhood pigeons are tempted to move in. Thereafter, perhaps an annual (or six monthly visit) visit keeps the shopping centre pigeon-free.

How to remove a pigeon from inside a supermarket

At times a stray pigeon may become trapped inside a supermarket. The easiest way to remove it is with an air rifle. Once trading concludes and all customers have left, its a simple matter to shoot the stray pigeon with a low powered air rifle in order to stun it and send it to the ground, where its immediately collected and bagged up. If the pigeon is at one end of the supermarket, staff need only be instructed to remain at the other end for a minute- the time needed to walk down to the pigeon and shoot it with a pellet. The pellet is just powerful enough to bring a pigeon to the ground for collection, and not powerful enough to pierce the pigeon and dent tin or wood in the background.
